Earlier this year, Google Plus for business finally opened its doors to “Pages,” a platform for businesses and organizations to connect, inform, and engage with their communities. NASA led the ways as the first federal agency to join Google+ and now more federal agencies are quickly following suit.

This fairly new social platform is quickly becoming popular with federal agencies as another outlet to communicate their message. Agencies are able to connect and engage with their audiences in a completely new and innovative way through such things as “Hangouts” and “Circles.”

Here is a list of just a few federal agencies that are now on Google+:

The U.S. Marine Corps officially launched its social media handbook that outlines Marine Corps social media principles. The guide’s intent is to help Marines through the use of social media to empower Marines and the community to participate in the discussion and improve representatives of the Corps.

The social media principles outlined in The Social Corps handbook is based on the Marine Corps Vision and Strategy 2025 and the public affairs tasks outlined in the Marine Corps Service Campaign Pan for 2009-2015. The handbook provides tips and how-to’s, along with professional behavior guidance, security assistance and frequently asked questions.

Veterans Day is a time to honor and reflect upon all Veterans past and present. It is a time to honor our heroes, our family members and our friends for their bravery and sacrifices they have made for this great country.

Over the years, social media has made it easier for individuals of all ages to connect and communicate through platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. These social platforms provide another outlet that individuals can use to reach out to the modern generation of Veterans.

With Veterans Day just around to corner, the U.S. Army would like people to connect and drive conversation so that social media can help give this important day the attention it deserves.

To help start the conversation, the Army has released the “Social Media Roundup – 5 ways to highlight Veterans Day on social media” that includes: branding, feature user content, link to outside content, Flickr photo albums and Twitter and hashtags.

How are you honoring Veterans on November 11, 2011?

The HUDdle (Housing and Urban Development)

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development launched a new interactive blog, The HUDdle. This informative, socially connected community outlet was built to provide a place to inform, connect, converse and learn. HUD’s goal for HUDdle is to “provide an outlet for two-way dialogue that helps provide more responsive service more efficient use of taxpayer dollars.”

VAntage Point (Veterans Affairs)

VAntage Point is the official blog of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that hopes to build new relationships between the Department and those they serve. Throwing the old way of communicating out the door, VAntage Point not only informs their audience but also allows for community involvement with their open comments section for front-page posts, and their special “Guest Posts” contribution section.

Source: Work in Progress

(Work in Progress) (Labor)

(Work in Progress) is the U.S. Department of Labor’s official blog, catchy name isn’t it? Comprised of the agencies and offices that make up the DOL, it shares empowering stories that they hope will impact with the American people.

Source: DipNote

DipNote (State)

A clever play off “diplomacy,” DipNote is the official blog of the U.S. Department of State that offers a wide range of information on U.S. foreign policy. DipNote offers “an alternative source to mainstream media” and the opportunity for the public to discuss important issues with senior Department officials.

Source: Fast Lane

Fast Lane (Transportation)

Fast Lane is the official blog of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood. This social media savvy U.S. Secretary shares news and insights that interest the transportation community. If you can keep up, LaHood is also on Facebook and Twitter!

Family Matters (American Forces Press Service, Defense)

Family Matters is synonymous for “did I do that” Steve Urkel and his clumsy mishaps; but today it is synonymous for being the official blog of the American Forces Press Service, U.S. Department of Defense. Family Matters provides resources and support to today’s military families that help them get through difficult times like deployment, separations and challenges of everyday life.

Pushing the Envelope (USPS Office of Inspector General)

The United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General decided to take a risk by “Pushing the Envelope” in the blogosphere. Pushing the Envelope provides a forum to discuss different aspects of the USPS and how they can make improvements.

What blogs did we miss? Any other suggestions?
